    Gergeti Trinity Church and the Caucasus peaks; 3 hours from Tbilisi by marshrutka.

    Yerevan (Armenia)

    4 nights

    Republic Square, the Cascade, Ararat views, cognac; Geghard and Garni as day trips.

    Baku (Azerbaijan)

    4 nights

    Icherisheher, the Flame Towers, the Caspian shore, mud volcanoes. Flight/train via Georgia.

Getting around

Marshrutka (minibus) and shared-taxi culture; intercity travel is cheap. Tbilisi is the central base.

  • —Azerbaijan and Armenia can be sensitive about each other's stamps; research the current situation and build the route around Georgia.
  • —Georgia is one of the easiest borders in the region: many nationalities get a full year visa-free.
  • —Marshrutkas leave when full, times are not guaranteed; start early in the morning.
