The Translation & Language apps worth installing

The language barrier is rarely a conversation problem; it is a menu, a station sign, a pharmacy label and a landlord's message problem. That is why camera translation and downloadable offline packs matter more than perfect grammar: you need the answer in three seconds, standing up, with one hand. Download the language pack while you still have wifi — the moment you need it is usually the moment you do not.

Google Translate

Free

The universal translator with camera, voice and offline support

Works without internet once the language pack is downloaded; camera mode translates menus and signs live, conversation mode runs two-way dialogue. Not perfect, but it single-handedly demolishes 90% of the language barrier.

Point the camera at a Japanese menu; learn you ordered "fugu" before the dish arrives, not after.

DeepL

Freemium

The most natural translation for long, important texts

Builds clearly more natural sentences than Google in European languages. It should be the first choice for "must not be misunderstood" texts: messages to hosts, visa letters, appeal e-mails.

Write the late check-in request to your Airbnb host with DeepL; out comes polite German that does not smell of machine translation.

Microsoft Translator

Free

Live multi-person conversation translation

Its signature feature is group chat mode: everyone speaks their own language on their own phone and reads in their own. A solid backup to Google and a better option in some languages.

In the hostel, run the same room conversation with Japanese and Spanish travelers on three phones in three languages.

Papago

Free

Better than Google for Korean and Japanese

Made by Naver; on Korea, Japan and China trips it translates local expressions and everyday speech noticeably better. Should be the second translator of anyone heading to East Asia.

Haggle with an elderly shopkeeper in Seoul in Papago's conversation mode; it cracks the idiom Google cannot.

Pleco

The gold standard Chinese dictionary

More than a dictionary for China-bound travelers: look up characters by camera or by drawing, get toned pronunciation. Its offline operation makes it indispensable while Google services are restricted in China.

In China, draw the street-sign character with your finger and learn what you are looking at, offline.

Gamify your first 100 words before you go

Ten minutes a day for 1-2 months before the trip carries you past the "hello-thanks-the bill please" triangle. Twenty words in the local language open doors surprisingly wide where you are going.

Start 6 weeks before the Italy trip; string three Italian sentences at the coffee bar and see the treat.

HelloTalk

Freemium

Language practice with native speakers, plus local tips

A language-exchange social network: you teach Turkish, they teach you Spanish. Find a partner from your target city before the trip and you get both practice and local tips no guidebook has.

Practice with your Mexico City partner before the trip; on landing, have coffee and hear the city from them.

Tandem

Freemium

A video-call language practice community

Similar to HelloTalk but stronger on video calls and professional tutor options. Better suited to those who want to move speaking practice from text to voice.

Two 20-minute Spanish video chats a week build your ear before the trip.

Can translation apps work without internet?

Yes, if you download the language pack in advance — most major apps offer offline packs, and camera translation works offline for the widely used languages. Quality drops compared with the online model, but it is more than enough for menus, signs and short exchanges. Download before you fly; offline packs are exactly the thing people forget until the signal is gone.
